From self-catering to eco luxury – all about the best Madeira hotels
When part of your job is to visit such a gorgeous place it is no wonder that we feel like a) sharing our finds with everybody and b) convince the boss to let us go again — but I digress. There are many Madeira hotels to choose from and these are just a few that took our breath away.

Casa Velha do Palheiro
A former hunting lodge, Casa do Palheiro was built by the 1st Count of Carvalhal in 1801 as a summer residence and has since then been turned into Madeira’s first country-house hotel. Nowadays the hotel is a member of the Relais & Châteaux establishment and has 32 rooms and five suites, each with their own style.
Its award-winning restaurant is highly regarded and you can enjoy your evening meal in the elegant dining room, whilst breakfast is served in the conservatory.
The hotel borders the famous Palheiro Gardens and the Palheiro Golf course – a superb 18-hole, par 72 Championship layout – and offers privileged access to guests staying at Casa Velha.
Hotel Quinta da Serra
This hotel is the perfect example of how to combine eco luxury with traditional and stylish touches. Through the imposing gates, a long tree-lined cobbled road, leads down to the pink original Quinta building where the hotel entrance is.
The restaurant in Hotel Quinta da Serra serves exquisite international and organic cuisine, prepared with local produce from the hotel’s organic gardens, where even the drinking water comes from a local source on the grounds. The breakfast is another feast to look forward to the next morning.
Relax by the pool with a book or take advantage of the hotel’s free transfer service to Funchal.
Quinta das Vinhas
Owned by the same family since it was built in 1685, Casa das Vinhas is a beautifully restored Quinta. Its original granary and storehouses on the ground floor were turned into three bedrooms whilst the upper floor more or less remained the same and houses three more rooms.
These cosy cottages share a big pool and have self-made breakfast. On arrival each cottage has a welcome basket with tea, coffee, sugar, milk, jam butter and juice and each morning fresh bread is delivered.
One of the most popular Madeira hotels. Take in the amazing setting and the fantastic views of the wild and rocky coast along the Atlantic ocean. From the reception area which has huge windows, you can see the nearby Piscinas Naturais – natural swimming pools of lava rock – where huge waves constantly refresh the water in these seawater basins. Entrance is free if you are staying at the hotel.
The excellent restaurant at the Aqua Natura serves delicious food and you can opt to sit outside on the balcony whilst watching the sun go down. The hotel prides itself on its impressive breakfast spread, which offers plenty of local produce.
