Swimming with dolphins holidays – where to go?
So many people dream of swimming with dolphins and we can see why. Whether you are on your honeymoon, travelling with the whole family or going solo this is simply too awesome to miss.
The biggest problem travellers have is to find the perfect destination and this is where we come in. We offer swimming with dolphins holidays in two amazing destinations – the Azores and most recently in Madeira.
Best places for a swimming with dolphins holiday
This is a true wild dolphin experience and undoubtedly the highlight of many of our client’s holidays. This island paradise contains 25% of the world’s known cetacean species and the largest variety of dolphin species worldwide, which makes the Azores the ultimate swimming with dolphins holiday destination.
There are 8 species around the Azores but you’re most likely to see Common, Atlantic Spotted, Risso’s and Bottlenose dolphins and the pods are usually large of between 50 and 200 individuals. Super pods of up to 1000 have been sighted though!
Some species are more curious and exuberant than others, leaping out of the sea and swimming close to you beneath the water. A glance from a dolphin is an unusual, memorable even spiritual experience. They are intelligent, highly organised and present no danger to humans and the symphony of communication sounds you’ll hear beneath the water is extraordinary.
Our colleagues in Madeira, who organise our Swimming with dolphins trips have come up with a unique way to be in the water with dolphins. It is not just about splashing around, which can cause stress to these beautiful mammals.
They will always assess the situation first, to see if you will be swimming with the ‘right’ dolphins. If there are mothers with young ones or if the pod only consists of younger dolphins, then you don’t go in the water, but you can still see them up close from the Rib.
Once a pod has been spotted and they’ve started swimming near the Rib, a small group of people will be let in at a time and you will be holding on to a short rope and be pulled along slowly. This way we can make sure that you get even closer to the dolphins and have a great experience.
Because of its warm weather all-year-round there isn’t a best time to go and you can make this dream come true from January to December.
