Educational whale watching holidays in the Azores

There’s a host of whale and dolphin watching holidays in the Azores to choose from, but not many offer a real insight into the research, the conservation and the issues surrounding these incredible animals. We’ve put together three of the best educational whale and dolphin watching holidays on the islands :

1 – In the Trail of the Great Whales
20-27 April 2019

Based on Pico, this trip is led by Richard Sears, founder of the Mingan Island Cetacean Study (MICS) in Canada, who has been conducting biological field research on Blue whales since 1979.

The trip aims to provide an understanding of the behaviour, social organisation and the distribution of the great whales and takes place during the main migration period in the Azores of the Blue, Fin, Sei, Humpback and other baleen whales.

This 7 night trip includes :
– Half board accommodation right next to the whale watching base
– 3 full day expeditions out to sea
– 1 full day tour of Pico visiting the whaling factory museum at Sao Roque, the look out at Queimada, the whaler’s museum in Lajes and the whaler’s village of Calheta
– a briefing about the biology and ecology of cetaceans
– 2 presentations about Blue whale research in the North Atlantic
– a selection of talks about Pico and its flora and fauna everyday at 7pm

2 – Whale and dolphin research holiday with Lisa Steiner

Spend your holiday with Lisa Steiner, the Azores’ leading cetacean expert. She has been studying whales around the islands since the 1980’s and takes photos of their flukes and matches them on a piece of software to other sightings around the world. This enables biologists to understand the migration routes of these mysterious animals.

During your trip, Lisa will get you involved in her research, accompany you on your boat trips out as well as giving talks on her findings and in depth information on the different species you might see.

You’ll be based at the cosmopolitan yachty town of Horta on the island of Faial in a 4 star hotel by the marina. Lisa has a selection of 5,7 and 9 night trips which you can join (see 2019 dates below).

2019 trips are selling quickly so if you’re keen, you’ll need to book asap.

3 – Whales, dolphins and the whaling history of the Azores

This 7 night whale and dolphin watching holiday is available throughout the year. It’s special because you’ll be looked after by Miguel Cravinho and his wonderful team at Terrazul based in the pretty traditional town of Vila Franca on Sao Miguel island.

Miguel is a local naturalist and whaling historian so as well as going out to see the whales and dolphins, spending time with a marine biologist going through their research, you’ll also get time with Miguel talking about the history of whaling and he’ll show you an original whaling canoe (‘canoa’) that he has lovingly restored.

To top it all, you’ll be staying in a very special hotel – a restored convent where your elegant room will be set around it’s glorious cloisters.
