Exciting new accommodation on Sao Miguel, Azores
Here at Archipelago Choice we are always on the lookout for new and interesting accommodation options to add to our ever-expanding portfolio of hotels, guesthouses, B&Bs and self-catering properties, and this year I was very excited to take my family to an amazing new option for those wishing to spend some time relaxing and exploring the western coast of Sao Miguel in the Azores.
YOUR PLACE OR MOSTEIROS PLACE?
The hotel in question is Mosteiros Place, a group of six apartment ‘pods’ overlooking the seaside parish of Mosteiros at the north-western tip of Sao Miguel. This new accommodation on Sao Miguel opened just last year (2018) and the location is stunning – perched high up above the town and westward-facing, the huge floor to ceiling windows invite you to gaze over the rocky stacks just off the coast and out to the endless Atlantic Ocean beyond. And of course, facing west means that this may well be the best place on Sao Miguel from where you can enjoy beautiful uninterrupted sunsets from your own private terrace!
The six apartments are all identical, the only difference being that one of them has been adapted for guests with reduced mobility. Each one comprises a lounge area with small kitchenette, bathroom, bedroom and terrace, plenty of room for couples but also a good option for families as the sofa in the lounge converts into a second bed. Our hosts knew we were coming with our baby daughter Hetty, and there was a lovely wooden cot ready in our bedroom for her when we arrived. The apartments are all furnished to a very good standard – think white with a lot of Ikea-esque fixtures and fittings and you’ll get the general idea.
The lounge / dining area provides a nice space in which you can relax and enjoy the view (have I already mentioned the massive windows?) and the kitchenette is adequate for preparing basic meals if you wish (microwave, hob, coffee machine and kettle). A continental style breakfast is included and can either be taken in the breakfast room or in your apartment and there are various snacks and drinks available from the room service menu too.
The bathroom has a bath with a shower and there is also skylight which can be operated remotely, and the bedroom has a great big comfy super kingsize bed. Both the lounge and the bedroom have sliding patio doors leading to your own private terrace, providing a nice place to sit out in the evening.
The communal areas include the aforementioned breakfast room, a terrace with a small pool and sun loungers and a gym for guests to use. The overall feel of Mosteiros Place is one of peace and quiet, somewhere to relax away from the bustle of Ponta Delgada.
We were only there for one night but I can see it would be a great option for those wishing to get away from it all for a few days – an ideal place for honeymooners looking for somewhere private to wind down after busy wedding celebrations, or those looking for a comfortable base from where the western areas of Sao Miguel can easily be explored. In fact this new accommodation on Sao Miguel really opens up a side of the island which has perhaps been overlooked until now.
Getting to Mosteiros Place is easy. It is 30km from the airport and main town of Ponta Delgada, which takes about 45 minutes by road. There are a couple of small grocery shops in Mosteiros itself and you’ll also find one or two bars and restaurants there too. Driving down to the town centre takes 5 minutes, walking 20 minutes – and friendly bar owners will help arrange a taxi to take you back if you don’t wish to walk back up the hill!
