Explore Keswick’s bustling market
Scenic drive over the spectacular Honister pass
Explore the pretty walking trail around Buttermere
If you’re looking for a short and relaxing break somewhere beautiful, this long weekend could be just what you’re after. On this 5 night holiday (we recommend Thursday to Tuesday but it’s up to you), you’ll divide your time between the small market town of Keswick on the shores of Derwent Water in the northern Lake District, and the spectacularly located, traditional, Kirkstile Inn, nestled between beautiful Loweswater and Crummock Water.
Designed entirely around the pace of life you enjoy, we’ve included a morning gently exploring Derwent Water by canoe or paddle board with a private guide, and given you plenty of time for lazy breakfasts, shopping and long walks taking in the most stunning views. Our Lake District holidays are flexible, so if you like to be active, we have a whole range of activities you can add in. You’ll fine some suggestions in the itinerary here, but get in touch for our full list of options.
We’ll you off your train at Penrith Station for the 20min transfer to Keswick, home of Archipelago Choice. Settle into your comfortable, friendly guesthouse, home for the next three nights. Keswick has a great selection of bars and restaurants for you to choose from this evening and we’ll recommend our favourites.
Today we’ll enjoy the magnificence if the Borrowdale valley, by taking a kayak or paddleboard trip on Derwentwater.
This morning, we will collect you after (a heart) breakfast and head down to the shores of Derwentwater where you’ll be taken through some canoe or paddle board (you choose) basics before we head out onto the lake. Our guide will entertain and inform you with interesting tales as you paddle between quiet bays and wooded islands .
This afternoon is free, why not have lunch in one of the popular cafes by the lake, or head to one of the friendly pubs in the market square.
Today you have a free day and after breakfast you might like to explore Keswick’s market (every Thursday and Saturday). Located in the heart of our town centre, the market attracts both locals and tourists, with stalls offering a wide selection local produce including award winning hot and cold foods to sample and take away.
If you’re interested in local arts and crafts, we recommend popping into the Makers Mill, a creative venue on the banks of the River Greta. Here you’ll find a collection of makers studios and a gallery….you could even plan your long weekend around workshops in pottery, life drawing, weaving, bag making, lampshade making and much more.
This morning you’ll check out of your guesthouse after breakfast. Our driver will collect you and your bags and take you, via the scenic Honister pass, to the charming Lakeland village of Buttermere where you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy an independent self-guided stroll around beautiful Buttermere lake (4.7 miles, difficulty: easy, time : 1.5- 2 hours) and/or lunch in the village. We recommend a hearty meal at the historic Fish Inn which dates back to the 1700s, or something lighter at one of the farm cafes. After lunch, our guide will take you to the Kirkstile Inn where you’ll spend the next two nights.
Today is a free day. In the warmer months, you might like to indulge in one of our favourite ways to start the day today … with a wild swim in the crisp, clear Crummock Water lake with our local swim guide.
Alternatively, you might like to enjoy one of our self-guided walks from the door of the Kirkstile Inn; or walk or cycle around the wooded trails of nearby Whinlatter forest, home to the protected red squirrel.
Those with a head for heights might like to join our guides to tackle Honister’s Via Ferrata for an extreme way to see some of the most spectacular and hard to reach cliff sides and rock outcrops in the Lake District!
After breakfast we’ll take you back to the train station for your train home
